What is the Stock Market?

Learning the stock market and how it works is simple when you know the basics behind it all.  The stock market is similar to any other market, except it is for corporate stock.  For example, at a supermarket, food and other goods is bought and sold. You buy it and the store sells it. In the stock market, stocks are bought and sold. Originally, the Corporation sells the stock, but once it is sold, it continues to be bought and sold among other stockholders.

The stock market is what is referred to overall. Individually, stocks are sold on stock exchanges. For example, the New York Stock Exchange is a stock exchange where many American corporate stocks are sold. There are also exchanges in London, Japan, and all over the world. Once you know this thoroughly, you can continue to begin learning the stock market.

How do you Earn Money with the Stock Market?

In order to earn money with the stock market, you have to buy and sell stock yourself. If you buy a share of stock for $30 and then sell it later for $40, you have made a profit of $10. You need to be strategic in how you buy and sell stock. Making a profit isn’t that difficult, but making a good profit can be tricky.

When you are learning the stock market and learning how to make a lot of money with it, your goal is to have a high rate of return. The rate of return is the percentage of money you make on your original investment within a specified period of time.

Let’s go back to the original example. Let’s say you bought stock for $30 on January 1, 2008. You then sell the stock for $40 on January 1, 2015. It took you seven years to make a $10 profit. This means you got a profit of 33%. Your annual rate of return is 4.76%. That is not a bad return for the stock market, but it could be better. Of course, this is assuming we’re not in a recession and things are as normal.

The average total return of the stock market is about 10 to 15%. This means you should be strategic in how you choose stocks to buy and when you choose to buy them. The better return would be if you sold the stock for $40.00 three or four years earlier.

It takes practice to get good at buying and selling stocks at the right times. Sometimes a you will be able to make a great profit and other times you might lose money. Even some of the best investors don’t make a high return on every single investment they make. This is because the stock market is very volatile and you can’t predict what it will do for sure.
