When you invest money, you can choose short term investing or long term investing. Each has it’s place in investing. You need to understand the difference between the two before you can use them effectively.

Short Term Investing

The short term is usually within 6 months or less. This means if you buy a share of stock and sell it within the next six months, you have made a short term investment. This is the case not just when buying stock. It includes all investing within that time frame.

Short term investing could be as short as minutes. Often day traders buy and sell very quickly. This is for a quick gain and not long term earnings. For wealth building over time, you will need long term investing.

Long Term Investing

Long term investing is when you make investments that last longer than six months. You might sell some investments after a couple years or hold on to them for decades. What you do with them will depend on your research and analysis of your investments.

Long term investing is often referred to as buy and hold. It is a strategy where you buy investments and hold onto them over a long term. You are looking to increase your wealth over time, not just make quick cash.

Which Strategy should you Choose?

This will depend largely on what your motives are. If you are looking to save for retirement, for example, long term investing is a great strategy. If you want to make a full time job out of it, you might want to try trading.

I am not recommending you take on day trading as a career. That is a big decision, as is taking on any new career or business. Make sure you know exactly what you’re getting into before you go further in that direction. Short term trading is very risky, and it’s hard to come out on top, let alone break even.

Long term investing is a great strategy to build wealth. Instead of buying and selling investments all the time, you spend your time and effort researching a small number of investments and putting confidence in them. Sell only when you feel it’s necessary and buy only when you know it’s a great buy.

Before you start any kind of investing, learn about the types of investments you are interested in and become an expert in them. This will help you avoid simple mistakes. Also, learn about risk and how to use it wisely. During your investing days, sometimes you’ll lose money and sometimes you make money. Keep that in mind and make good choices if you want to work toward making good money-making decisions.

Why Start Learning to Invest?

Why should you start learning to invest your money? The short answer is that you should be learning to invest in order to make money. This could be making money for retirement in the future or to build your wealth overall. In the end, you want to make money.

You should start learning to invest so that when you do invest, you are choosing investments wisely and buying and selling effectively. Just because you bought stock doesn’t mean you made money. You need to know what you’re doing.

Learning to invest means choosing the types of investments you want to invest in and mastering basic knowledge of them. For example, if you want to invest in bonds, make sure you understand how bonds work, how to get bonds, and how to make money from them. If you decide to invest in more than one investment type, you need to learn about all of them.

Learning to Invest Early

Learning to invest early on in the game is one of the best things you can do. If you start investing and you don’t know what you’re doing, you are taking a big risk and could lose a lot of your cash. Taking the time to study and learn about different investments is not a big deal but will help you a lot in the end.

In order to do this, start by getting a book about investing. If you know what type of investments you want to make, get some specific books on that topic. For example, if you want to learn to invest in the stock market, get a book about stocks for beginners. You can progress to more difficult books that contain more in-depth strategies as you learn more.

Practice what you Learn and Get Better at Investing

A great way to improve your investing skills and increase your possible rate of return is to practice what you’re doing. Many people learn from doing and a great way to do that is to practice with a free stock markets simulation game.

Wall Street Survivor is a popular simulation game that is absolutely free to sign-up for. It is like you are investing in a real market except you’re using fantasy money. This is a great way to practice different levels of risk and learn the ropes of the stock market. You could also win free prizes which is a bonus.

Sign up for Wall Street Survivor here.

Once you’ve taken the time to learn and practice testing, whether you are investing in stocks, mutual funds, bonds, currency, or another investment, you will find that investing as a whole is easier and you do better. You’ll be more likely to make good investment choices and get more out of your time.

Do you want to learn how to invest? Investing in itself is a simple process. Investing and earning a high rate of return is when it gets a little tricky. Fortunately, you can begin the whole process and learn how to invest from the start with just a few basic instructions. It will then be up to you to take the time to learn what you need to know and make a high return.

Set Up a Brokerage Account

When you learn how to invest, most likely you’ll need to set up a brokerage account. With some investments you don’t need a brokerage account such as buying real estate or buying government bonds. If you plan to invest in stocks, corporate bonds, or other common investments, it is likely that you’ll need to set up a brokerage account.

There are basically two types of brokerage accounts, full-service brokerage accounts and discount brokerage accounts. A full-service brokerage firm is much more costly. You are not only paying to trade stocks but you’re also paying for advice and their management. If you feel you can do your own research better or you only want to invest in mutual funds that don’t require as much research, don’t pay the extra fees.

Discount brokerage firms are fairly new and are available online. This has many great advantages when you learn how to invest. First of all, they are cheap. Many firms charge you less than $10 a trade. That is a great bargain. Also, you can access your account online and you never have to call or visit someone in person. You can check your stocks and investments whenever you feel like it.

If you’re a more hands-on person, you might want to go with a firm that is both online and off-line. You can visit someone in person and talk on the phone when you absolutely need to, you can check your account whenever you like as well. Fortunately, there are many brokerage firms available these days that are competing for your trades. That means lower prices for you.

Research Investments

Research is of the utmost importance when you learn how to invest. When you are buying stocks, bonds, real estate, commodities, or other investments, you must have prior research. If you are trading stocks, you are simply going to follow the charts and trends. Most likely, you will be doing long-term investing which will acquire fundamental analysis.

When you research corporations, you need to look at financial statements, calculate ratios, and become a master of information on the corporation as a whole. Also, just because you spent several hours researching a company, if you think it’s a bad investment, don’t buy it. That is why you put in the time to research.

Buy and Sell what you want

You don’t make money on the stock until you sell it. Bonds work a little differently. You are earning an interest rate. However you decide to invest and whatever you decide to invest in, make sure you buy and sell what you feel is making the most money and what you know well. This goes back to the research as well. If you don’t know a company and you don’t understand how they make money, you shouldn’t invest.

Also, don’t buy what friends and family say are great investments. You especially should not do this if they are novice investors that know little about investing is all. Take your time to learn how to invest and build your knowledge on the subject. This will allow you to be a better investor overall.

What is the Stock Market?

Learning the stock market and how it works is simple when you know the basics behind it all. The stock market is similar to any other market, except it is for corporate stock. For example, at a supermarket, food and other goods is bought and sold. You buy it and the store sells it. In the stock market, stocks are bought and sold. Originally, the Corporation sells the stock, but once it is sold, it continues to be bought and sold among other stockholders.

The stock market is what is referred to overall. Individually, stocks are sold on stock exchanges. For example, the New York Stock Exchange is a stock exchange where many American corporate stocks are sold. There are also exchanges in London, Japan, and all over the world. Once you know this thoroughly, you can continue to begin learning the stock market.

How do you Earn Money with the Stock Market?

In order to earn money with the stock market, you have to buy and sell stock yourself. If you buy a share of stock for $30 and then sell it later for $40, you have made a profit of $10. You need to be strategic in how you buy and sell stock. Making a profit isn’t that difficult, but making a good profit can be tricky.

When you are learning the stock market and learning how to make a lot of money with it, your goal is to have a high rate of return. The rate of return is the percentage of money you make on your original investment within a specified period of time.

Let’s go back to the original example. Let’s say you bought stock for $30 on January 1, 2008. You then sell the stock for $40 on January 1, 2015. It took you seven years to make a $10 profit. This means you got a profit of 33%. Your annual rate of return is 4.76%. That is not a bad return for the stock market, but it could be better. Of course, this is assuming we’re not in a recession and things are as normal.

The average total return of the stock market is about 10 to 15%. This means you should be strategic in how you choose stocks to buy and when you choose to buy them. The better return would be if you sold the stock for $40.00 three or four years earlier.

Learn through Doing

It takes practice to get good at buying and selling stocks at the right times. Sometimes a you will be able to make a great profit and other times you might lose money. Even some of the best investors don’t make a high return on every single investment they make. This is because the stock market is very volatile and you can’t predict what it will do for sure.

One of the best ways to start learning the stock market and learning how to earn a high annual rate of return is by practicing. You can use a free stock market simulation game. With this type of practice, you can make high-risk investments to see how they will turn out. You won’t losing money because you are only using the fantasy money given to you in the game. This is also a great way to get started in the stock market before you invest in the real market.

You can sign-up for a free stock market simulation game called Wall Street Survivor. It is completely free and you can also win cash prizes daily and weekly and also for good traders. It resembles the stock market really well which makes a great tool for practice.
